THREE SUSPECTS FATALLY WOUNDED IN SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE IN ALRODE

PARKTOWN, ALRODE | Three suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with police along Vereeniging Road in Alrode on Thursday afternoon, 20 August 2026.

The incident follows a robbery in which a man was allegedly robbed of an undisclosed amount of money while entering his residential property. Police activated a lookout for the suspects’ vehicle.

"Members of the Tactical Response Team later spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The occupants allegedly opened fire at the police, who retaliated and called for backup", said Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi

The Gauteng Traffic Airwing, CAP Security and Tracker Connect security teams responded to assist the police.

"All three suspects inside the vehicle were fatally wounded and declared dead at the scene", She added

Police recovered three firearms, including two with their serial numbers filed off, as well as money suspected to have been stolen during the robbery. A set of false registration number plates was also recovered.

The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing as investigations into the incident continue.

POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A MAN LINKED TO TUMAHOLE RAPE CASE

TUMAHOLE | Police in Tumahole, Free State, are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and locating a man linked to a rape case.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at approximately 03:00, the complainant was outside a tavern looking for her friend when she was approached from behind by an unknown male,” said Sergeant Josephine Rani.

The suspect allegedly threatened and grabbed the woman before taking her to a dark and secluded area, where she was allegedly raped. He then fled the scene.

The Tumahole Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is investigating the case and is appealing to anyone who may recognise the person in the photograph or know his whereabouts to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Mamokete Sehume on 016 974 6287 or 079 415 0535. Information can also be reported to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or anonymously through the MySAPS App.

BROWN MOGOTSI TO BRING THIRD BAIL APPLICATION BASED ON ALLEGED NEW FACTS

GAUTENG | Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has postponed the case against self-confessed police informant, Oupa Brown Mogotsi,45, to 25 August 2026, when his defence is expected to bring a third bail application based on alleged new facts.

Mogotsi remains in custody after his previous bail bid was dismissed, with the High Court also dismissing his appeal on 29 July 2026.

"Mogotsi falsely reported being shot at while driving in Vosloorus on 3 November 2025. According to the prosecution, the firearm was allegedly discharged to create the impression that an attempt had been made on his life", said NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mahlatlole

"Mogotsi faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice and perjury", he added

The NPA says it will oppose the bail application.

PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA ANNOUNCES NATIONAL WATER ACTION PLAN TO TACKLE SOUTH AFRICA’S WATER CRISIS

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the National Water Action Plan represents a coordinated national effort to restore reliable water and sanitation services to communities across South Africa.

The plan, led through the National Water Crisis Committee, brings together immediate interventions and long-term reforms aimed at strengthening municipal water services and improving the country’s water infrastructure.

"the initiative will focus on addressing urgent water challenges while also putting measures in place to ensure sustainable and reliable water supplies in the future", said Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya

The plan is expected to strengthen municipal capacity, improve infrastructure maintenance and development, and support efforts to secure water resources for both current and future generations.

Ramaphosa said, "the coordinated approach is intended to ensure that communities have access to reliable water and sanitation services while addressing the underlying challenges affecting the country’s water system."

BURIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: SEGOPOTJO MAFA TO BE LAID TO REST TOMORROW

MATIPANE VILLAGE | The family of Segopotjo Mafa has announced that his funeral will take place tomorrow, Friday, 21 August 2026, at his home in Ga- Matipane Village, Bolobedu.

Mafa went missing a year ago after he was admitted at an unregistered Appreciate Makhubele Rehabilitation Center outside Modjadjiskloof.
His family was later informed that remains believed to be his had been found in a dam in Tzaneen.

The family was able to identify the remains through the clothes he was wearing, while DNA results were awaited to formally confirm his identity.

His family has since called for answers and justice surrounding his disappearance.

UNANNOUNCED SCHOOL SEARCHES IN ALEXANDRA RECOVER OVER 100 PROHIBITED ITEMS

| Over 100 prohibited items were seized during unannounced SAPS-led safety searches across three Alexandra high schools, joined by Gauteng MEC Lebogang Maile.

Inspectors recovered 40 contraband items at East Bank High School, including disposable vapes, suspected dagga, cigarettes, knives, and grinders. At Realogile High School, officials confiscated over 41 items—including vapes and scissors—alongside 20 cupcakes sent for substance testing. A further 28 items, including a multi-tool knife and broken glass, were seized at Alexandra High School.

"The interventions form part of ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse, violence, gangsterism and dangerous weapons, while creating safer environments for teaching and learning," stated the Gauteng Department of Education.

HLABISA DISTANCES COGTA FROM ALLEGED GRIQUA KING CORONATION

PRETORIA | Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has distanced the department from reports regarding the alleged coronation of Maurice Vivian Kok as King of the Griqua Nation.

"Kok’s application to be recognised as a Khoi-San leader is still being considered by the Commission on Khoi-San Matters. The process has not been concluded, and no official recognition has been granted by the Minister or the Department," Hlabisa stated.

CoGTA cautioned against unauthorized ceremonies, emphasizing that leadership recognition must strictly follow the statutory processes outlined in the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act.

GREATER LETABA MAYOR VISITS MOOKETSI FARMERS MARKET TO BOOST LOCAL ECONOMY

MOOKETSI | The Mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality, Cllr Dagma Mamanyoha, has visited the Mooketsi Farmers Market to learn more about its operations and its role in supporting farmers, traders and the local economy.

The Mayor was accompanied by PMT Member Cllr Maria Mokgwathi, Cllr Rosina Ramalatso, EXCO Members Cllrs Mphiwa Ramaremela, Grace Selowa and Rito Baloyi, Municipal Manager Mr Obed Sewape and members of Municipal Management.

The delegation was welcomed by ZZ2 CEO Mr Tommy van Zyl and his management team, together with the Manager of the Freshlinq Market.

Van Zyl explained how the market's food supply chain operates and the opportunities it creates for farmers, traders and buyers. He highlighted the important role the market plays in supporting small-scale farmers and street vendors.

The market currently has more than 3,000 registered producers and serves more than 90,000 buyers, most of whom are street vendors.

Mayor Mamanyoha welcomed the market's inclusive approach, particularly its ability to connect small farmers with buyers while giving informal traders access to fresh produce at affordable prices.

“We hope more small farmers and buyers can take advantage of this platform and assist the municipality in feeding this catalytic agent to our municipal economy,” said Mayor Mamanyoha.

The Mayor also commended the relationship between ZZ2 and the Greater Letaba Municipality, saying such partnerships can contribute to local economic development and food security.

The visit ended with a walkabout of the market, where the delegation got an opportunity to see the market's systems and operations firsthand.

The municipality says the visit highlighted the importance of partnerships that support farmers, create opportunities for local traders and contribute to the growth of the local economy.

SOUTH AFRICA | Civil rights organisations AfriForum and the March and March Movement have mutually greed to work together on issues affecting communities across South Africa.

The discussions focused on community development, education, skills training, crime prevention, agricultural development, the protection of cultural identity and heritage, as well as the rule of law.

“The Movement believes that unsecured borders have serious consequences for the ailing economy. The skyrocketing trade in illicit goods are affecting businesses and may result in job losses. Crime continues to ravage communities, and civic movements should work together to put systems in place to ensure the creation of safer communities,” said Ngobese-Zuma.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the organisation is willing to share its experience with March and March as the movement works to strengthen communities.

“One can choose to cooperate where we agree and where we share common interests. We cannot allow differences on specific matters to stand in the way of cooperation that would benefit our children,” said Kriel.

28-YEAR-OLD MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN GILEAD

LIMPOPO, GILEAD | A 28-year-old man, Lesetja Frans Molomo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court for the rape of a 13-year-old girl at Hlogo ya Nku village under the Gilead policing area.

"The incident occurred on 20 September 2024 when the victim met Molomo, who was known to her, at a local shop. He allegedly forced her to accompany him to his homestead, where he forcibly undressed and raped her", said Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers added that following the incident, Molomo allegedly gave the victim a cellphone and instructed her to keep it so that he could contact her whenever he wanted.

"The traumatic experience reportedly left the young victim distressed, isolated and refusing to eat, while she also threatened to commit suicide. Her sister later discovered the cellphone and confronted her, leading to the disclosure of the rape", he said.

The matter was reported to the victim’s mother, who informed the police. The case was subsequently transferred to the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation.

Sergeant Saki Ledwaba was assigned to the case and, through his investigation, Molomo was arrested on 4 November 2024. He was denied bail and remained in custody until his sentencing.

On Friday, 14 August 2026, the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court sentenced Molomo to life imprisonment for the rape of the minor.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers welcomed the sentence and commended Sergeant Ledwaba for his dedication to the case.

“This life sentence reflects our commitment to protecting women and children in ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence face the full might of the law. I applaud Sergeant Ledwaba for his professionalism and dedication,” said Lieutenant General Scheepers.

TZANEEN FCS SECURES LIFE SENTENCE FOR A MAN WHO RAPED A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL

PULANENG VILLAGE | Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has secured a life sentence for a 33-year-old man who raped a seven-year-old girl in Pulaneng Village under the Maake policing area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the sentence follows a thorough investigation by the FCS Unit, which led to the arrest of the accused shortly after the incident. “The life sentence is a significant outcome in the fight against gender-based violence, particularly crimes committed against children,” said Ledwaba.

The incident happened on 8 January 2024, when the young victim was walking home from school with her friends. The accused, identified as Tebogo Raymond Malatji, allegedly chased the group, grabbed the victim and dragged her into nearby bushes, where he raped her.

The victim’s friends ran to seek help from family members, who went to the scene, but the suspect had already fled.

A rape case was opened, and the docket was transferred to the Tzaneen FCS Unit for further investigation. Constable Terry Ngobeni was assigned to the case and successfully traced and arrested Malatji at Pulaneng Village on 10 January 2024.

The investigating officer opposed bail throughout the trial, ensuring that the accused remained in custody until his sentencing.

Malatji appeared before the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended Constable Ngobeni and the prosecution team for their work in ensuring that justice was served.

Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers said, “This life sentence sends a clear message that perpetrators of gender-based violence will face the full might of the law."

HAWKS INVESTIGATION ENDS IN FOUR-YEAR JAIL TERM FOR R1.3 MILLION STONE THEFT

A decade-long investigation by the Hawks has resulted in a four-year direct imprisonment sentence for a businessman found guilty of stealing crushed concrete stones worth approximately R1.3 million.

The Sekhukhune Regional Court sentenced 65-year-old Manamalala Stephen Phasha on 12 August 2026 for the theft of crushed stones that were intended for a road construction project in Ga-Nkwana Village in 2011.

Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Colonel Avele Fumba said the matter was first reported to the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) after concerns were raised about the removal of construction material from the project site.
"The case was later referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Polokwane.

Investigations revealed that Phasha, operating through Phasha General Trading CC, unlawfully removed the crushed stones without the required authorisation and failed to comply with the agency’s procedures," said Fumba.

Phasha was arrested in June 2016 and convicted in May 2024.
"Following the conclusion of the legal process, the court imposed a four-year prison sentence and declared him unfit to possess a firearm," added Fumba.

Investigators for their persistence and dedication, saying the outcome demonstrates the importance of thorough investigations in complex commercial crime cases, "said Major General (Adv) Gopz Govender.

"This sentence is a clear demonstration that complex commercial crime investigations require patience, precision, and determination. PREMIER PHOPHI RAMATHUBA CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AS LIMPOPO AGRICULTURE INVESTMENT COMES UNDER SPOTLIGHT

MARBLE HALL| Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has called for greater accountability in government’s investment in agriculture, saying every rand invested must translate into increased production, stronger businesses, jobs and improved livelihoods in her keynote address today on 13 August 2026.

“I’m a proud Premier of the province who is saying let’s work together because in Limpopo, farming, tourism and mining are the three pillars of our economy,” said the Premier.

“We are not here just that jobs can be created, but we are also here for food security,” she added.

Ramathuba delivered the keynote address during an oversight visit to Afrikan Farms, where she said the purpose of the visit was to assess whether government investment is achieving its intended impact and contributing to inclusive economic growth.

She said agriculture remains a key driver of Limpopo’s transformation under the Seventh Administration, with government focused on ensuring that agricultural projects become productive, competitive and sustainable.

One of the farms highlighted during the visit was Kopano Citrus Farm, which Premier Ramathuba described as an example of an inclusive agricultural model.

The cooperative has 11 members, including four people living with disabilities. It operates across 178 hectares, with 29.5 hectares currently planted with citrus.

Since 2009, approximately R32.9 million has been invested in infrastructure and production support at the farm.

The investment is now showing signs of growth, with Kopano Citrus Farm harvesting about 68,000 cartons of lemons, of which approximately 85% are destined for export markets.

The farm’s revenue has also increased significantly, rising from an estimated R2.76 million in 2025 to R11.56 million this year.

Beyond production and revenue, the farm is contributing to employment in the area. It currently provides 12 permanent jobs, in addition to seasonal employment opportunities during peak periods.

Premier Ramathuba said the progress at Kopano demonstrates what can be achieved when agricultural enterprises receive the necessary support, effective leadership and access to markets.

The Premier said farms such as Kopano have the potential to compete in international markets when they are supported with the right infrastructure, leadership and market opportunities.

SERVICES SETA TO PLACE 20 000 GRADUATES IN WORKPLACE PROGRAM

MAHIKENG | Services SETA has committed R2.9 billion towards helping 20 000 university and TVET college graduates gain practical work experience through a 24-month workplace-based learning program.

"The initiative, known as PowerX², is aimed at tackling the challenge faced by many young graduates who struggle to find jobs because they do not have enough work experience. An initial 1 000 graduates who are ready for placement have already been made available to the Offices of the Premier across all nine provinces," said Minister Buti Manamela.

Services SETA plans to work with around 3 000 employers across the country to create opportunities for graduates to gain practical skills, experience, and mentorship.

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has called on employers to open their workplaces and help young people gain the experience they need to enter the job market.

DSTV SET FOR ANOTHER CHANNEL SHAKE-UP AS M-Net MOVIES 1 AND kykNET Lekker FACE THE AXE

MultiChoice is set to make another major change to its DStv channel line-up, with M-Net Movies 1 and kykNET Lekker reportedly set to leave the platform on 16 September.

The development was highlighted by television industry commentator, TvwithThinus, who posted on X that MultiChoice will remove M-Net Movies 1 (DStv channel 104) and kykNET Lekker (DStv channel 148) from DStv.

The announcement has sparked debate among viewers, with many questioning whether the channels will be replaced by new offerings or whether the move forms part of a broader reduction in the number of channels available to subscribers.

One viewer asked: “Are they gonna be replaced with something new or is it a cutdown?”

Another expressed concern about the wider television industry, saying: “The opposite is sadly happening. Everybody is reducing channels. Across Africa, broadcasters are also getting out of current affairs.”
